We recently had two kittens join us by a chance of fate, however we were pretty unprepared! One main thing you need for kitties is a litter pan, so we went to work making just that!
Materials Needed:
Medium size bowl
Water
Scissors
Newspaper/Sales Papers
Baking soda
Dish soap (the more "free and clear" or "all natural" the better.
Towel or Paper Towels

To start you are going to want to cut your paper into strips because we to simulate kitty litter.
Next we are going to add a squeeze of soap to the bowl of water (I did roughly 2 tbsp). Once you've added the soap stir it a bit then add in your paper. Let the paper soak for at least 10 minutes as it is preparing the paper and cleaning it at the same time.
While we wait for the paper to soak now would be a good idea to lay out a towel for an upcoming step. When your news paper is finished soaking we will need to drain the water out (the water should look greyish). Once drained we need to rinse the soap out of the paper so go ahead and refill the bowl with more water or rinse in the sink, then ring out the paper as best as you can to remove as much water as possible. Lay the paper on the towel, fold the towel over and press down to try to squeeze some more of that water out.
Add a few dashes of baking soda, hand mix it in, and let your paper dry for at least 2 days. We let ours sit for roughly 2 1/2 days. Next we are going to tear the paper into smaller strips and crunch up the paper. Once you've done that then its ready! Add to the cat pan and you're all set!
While I love the availability of supplies, our kitties did not seem to like it after a days use. It should be noted that our cats seem to be quite picky to begin. If you have the time to make large batches this is a great, cheap, environmentally friendly, and a more natural alternative. Though our cats didn't like this for more than a day we did find that they were much happier with medium soft dirt dug up from the outside yard, but we can talk about how good it is and its advantages/disadvantages of it in another post.
Till next time, keep raising a sustainable future!
